Ten Tips to Help You Get A Good Night's Sleep
- Choose - to get a good night's sleep. You would be surprised just what making this decision will do for you.
- Food Intake - Watch what you eat. Specifically, stay away from caffeine (last sip eight hours before bedtime), sweets, or any food that is hard to digest (last bites at least ninety minutes before bedtime).
- Music or Sound FX - Use music or a sound fx (dream/sleep machine) to take your mind off of everything and help you to relax. I use a programmable CD player that has a silent shut off. I do not recommend a cassette player that has a loud "CLICK" right as you are about to doze off! The best sound fx machine I found is at Brookstone. I found a great inexpensive one at Target.
- Clean Area - A cluttered room is worrisome and reminds you of unfinished tasks. A clean room will give you a clear, refreshed, and relaxed feeling.
- Read - Reading will help get your mind off the days problems as long as your selection is not too exciting. Don't read in the bedroom, you need to start thinking of it as a place to sleep; unless this works for you.
- Bedtime - Be consistent, try to use the same bedtime seven days a week.
- Exercise - During the day, not right before bed, helps us to fall asleep more quickly.
- Temperature - Keep the bedroom cool. Most people sleep better in a cool room.
- NO TV - Television stimulates the mind. You do not want this prior to sleep. Of course there are those that fall asleep with the TV on, consider yourself lucky!
- NO Work - Do not, I repeat, do not bring work or problems to the bed. Take your mind off of them with music, sound, or thinking of something relaxing or peaceful.
If you are still having trouble, see a sleeping disorder clinic.
