Top 10 Ways to Reduce the #1 Health Problem in the United States:
Stress
- Exercise - Walk, walk, walk; (did I mention walk?) or at least commit yourself to some type of exercise that increases your heart rate for at least twenty to forty-five minutes, three or four times a week.
- Laugh - Laughter stimulates your cardio-vascular system, which releases endorphins and reduces tension causing us to feel better.
- Let It Go - Don't let the little things get to you. Deal with it as it comes, but do not, I repeat do not let it build up!
- Music - Listen to soothing music to unwind and relax. Upbeat music can lighten your outlook and improve your attitude. Suggestions include: Yanni's "Reflection of Passion" or George Winston's "Winter" CD, they're great!
- Read - A good book will focus your attention on something other than your stress. Censor your negative intake; be selective in what you watch, read, or hear.
- Nutrition - A good balanced diet, or at the very least a multi-vitamin, along with the appropriate amount of calories will provide your brain with the think power it needs to help you deal with stress.
- Sleep - At the end of the day, put aside all the day's problems. Promise yourself not to pick them up again until the morning. If you feel really stressed due to lack of sleep during the day, take a five to twenty minute catnap to refresh yourself if possible. Studies have shown that this amount of time is sufficient for your body to recharge itself for the next few hours.
- Hobbies - Enjoy an existing hobby or take up a new one. This clears your mind and gives you something positive to focus on.
- Complete a Task - Get an unfinished project done! This promotes a sense of accomplishment and motivates you to finish other tasks clearing your mind of ALL you have to do.
- Take a Bath - (Fellow employees will appreciate it!) Start with warm water for ten to fifteen minutes, then gradually add cold. Warm water revs up circulation and relaxes tight muscles. Cold water stimulates nerves, refreshes, and clears your mind.
Don't let stress control you, you control stress!
